Alejandro Tabilo Stuns Novak Djokovic in Rome
Historic Upset
In a stunning upset, Alejandro Tabilo of Chile defeated six-time champion Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-3 in the third round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Sunday.
Dominant Performance
Tabilo, ranked 63rd in the world, played with remarkable composure and aggression, taking control of the match from the outset. He broke Djokovic's serve twice in the first set and never looked back.
"I'm still trying to process what happened," said Tabilo after the match. "I played my best tennis today and I'm thrilled with the result."
Djokovic's Shock
For Djokovic, it was a rare setback. The 20-time Grand Slam champion had not lost at the Italian Open since 2004 and had won the tournament a record six times.
"I have to give credit to Alejandro," said Djokovic. "He played incredibly well today. I made too many unforced errors and he took advantage of them."
Historic Achievement
Tabilo's victory is the biggest of his career and one of the most surprising setbacks of Djokovic's illustrious career. It marks the first time that Djokovic has failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Italian Open since 2004.
The Chilean will now face Cristian GarĂn in the quarter-finals, while Djokovic will lick his wounds and prepare for the upcoming French Open.
