Survey data released today reveals that only 38% of those surveyed were aware that lifesaving lung cancer screening is available for those at high risk.
The 2024 Lung Health Barometer, a survey of 4,000 people across the United States, found that awareness of lung cancer screening remains low. Only 38% of those surveyed were aware that lifesaving lung cancer screening is available for those at high risk. This is despite the fact that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, with an estimated 130,000 people dying from the disease each year.
Lung cancer screening is a low-dose CT scan that can detect lung cancer at an early stage, when it is most treatable. The screening is recommended for people who are at high risk for lung cancer, such as those who have a history of smoking or who have been exposed to secondhand smoke.
The American Lung Association (ALA) is calling for increased awareness of lung cancer screening. The ALA recommends that all people at high risk for lung cancer talk to their doctor about getting screened.
“Lung cancer screening is a vital tool in the fight against lung cancer,” said Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the ALA. “We need to do more to make sure that everyone who is at high risk for lung cancer knows about screening and gets tested.”
